Nǐ Hǎo

Tuesday evening, we were escorted downtown by two hospitable English majors from the university, Gloria and Paige, to go to the bank, McDonald's and Wal-mart. They showed us that bus#52 is the bus to take downtown and back to the university, at a cost of only 1 yuan (15 cents Cdn.). We saw many appealing locations, such as multiple KFCs and a Pizza Hut. We went to the bank first and then McDonald's, which all of us were happy to see and eat. Without Gloria and Paige's assistance at the bank, our efforts would have been futile. Gloria and Paige did a great job of translating to the workers at the bank, McDonald's, and, of great help to us, at Wal-Mart, where we purchased some amenities, such as hangers, towels, and very soft, fluffy pillows. After Tuesday's trip downtown, we all feel competent enough to take what actually is a short bus trip downtown to get food and amenities. We are very thankful for the help of Gloria and Paige, who say they would be willing to assist us again, if we want.

Yesterday evening, we went downtown on our own to eat at Pizza Hut. The food was very good and wonderful to eat. As you can tell, we are adjusting to Chinese cuisine very well. This evening, we will go downtown again to try another delicacy at a restaurant called KFC.

Sounds like you're gaining a completely different perspective on what is Chinese food. Hey Lauren, how is Chinese in ten minutes a day working for you? :) Zai jian!

I am really proud of you as you even added third tone to your Chinese greetings:)

It's great to know that you settled in quickly. Have you noticed the differences between Chinese KFC/Pizza Hut/Walmart and Canadian ones?

Hope the teaching went smoothly this week. Look forward to some news about your class and students.

  3. Welll Th KFC is very similar. The fries are much more like our McDonald's fries than KFC's, and they serve dark meat in their chicken burgers rather than white, but it tastes very much the same. The pop is sweeter than home; I think they use something else to sweeten it, but I think I actually like it a bit better.

McDonald's is virtually the same as home, with the exception of a few additions to the menu, such as corn and chicken wings.

Wal-Mart is similar, but it feels more like you're at a super market than a Wal-Mart. Things are kind of scattered everywhere and they have are selling all kinds of cuisine and different things.

Pizza Hut, I'm not sure if it's the same, because I don't think I've ever eaten at a Pizza Hut, but it's absolutely amazing. The stuffed crust pizza there is to die for, Lol.

Since this post, we've been venturing a lot more into the local cuisine. Initially, the only Chinese we were really eating was on campus, which wasn't very good. However, all of the food that we've had off of campus has been excellent. Aside from some problems we have with ordering from time to time, due to the language barrier, our trips to different restaurants have been perfect. Also, the waitresses are alway very friendly, and do everything they can to try and accommodate for us. I think we're all getting quite settled into the Chinese culture.

We'll post a more thorough update shortly after we get our pictures together from the weekend :)
